Drinking Water Quality Information

A Brief History of Water
Water has been called "the most essential nutrient and the universal solvent" for many years. This is because of the importance of water for our own existence and its unique properties.
Since creation, the amount of water on this planet has not really changed. Our planet has a continuously operating water cycle. However water has and does change it's state, location, and ultimately availability to us for drinking purposes.
Every living creature depends on water to survive. A person can live for weeks without food, but only a few days without water. Almost daily, you can pick up a book or newspaper and read another fact emphasising the significance of drinking water in our daily lives.
Regulations and Guidelines
Drinking Water quality is controlled under The Water Supply (Water Quality) Regulations and The Water Supply (Water fittings) Regulations. BS6700 is one of the main standards associated with design specification, installation, testing and maintenance of water systems.
The water quality regulations relate to the levels of materials and substances allowable in drinking water. The water fittings regulations cover the design and installation of water fittings used in UK properties.
The Health Safety and Welfare Regulations detail that a supply of suitable drinking water should be available in every work place. The responsibility for ensuring the quality of drinking water is maintained once delivered or supplied to site rest with the employer, landlord, managing agent or other responsible person.
Best Management Practices
Whether the water is from a bottle, vending machine or tap there are many factors that can adversely effect it's quality and lead to a number of illnesses.
In order to ensure suitable drinking water is supplied to occupants in a building, It is recommended that an independent routine sampling program be implemented. Whilst this will ensure the water supplied to all employees is suitable for drinking, a routine sampling programme could also save thousands on excessive routine cleaning and chlorination works or system upgrades. If you can prove your water is fit to drink, then there is no need to make drastic changes to your system.
Environmental Considerations
Routine sampling ensures the implementation of an "eco friendly" precautionary control measure. It demonstrate a level of environmental, and health and safety awareness to all employees’ and visitors to any premise. Routine sampling means you know what you've got and is the cornerstone in knowing what action you need to take should a problem occur. Routine sampling can often remove rigid chemical cleaning programmes currently in place in many buildings.
Chemical cleaning work can be expensive, dangerous and in many cases it is harmful to our environment. To prevent excessive clean and chlorination regimes and installation of unnecessary new gadgets, consider implementing a routine sampling programme. This will enable you to make controlled decisions when approached with new gadgets, recommendations or adverse conditions.
